Christian Schad’s (1894–1982) coolly vibrant portraits, with their immaculate surfaces and the expressive eyes serving as “a mirror to the soul”, soon became icons of the 1920s. In addition to focusing on the well-known key works, which represented a decisive contribution to the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) movement, this publication also presents his early work, influenced by Cubism and Dadaism, and the work he produced during the 1950s, which is marked by abstract tendencies. His graphic œuvre shows that even at an advanced age he took joy in experimentation, doing brilliant work in a great variety of media and repeatedly exploring new frontiers, for example in his influential “Schadographs” as well as rare Formica pieces. Works by companions and contemporaries place Schad’s art in this catalogue in the context of Classical Modernism.
